Like most aspects of your home, your garage door needs to be adequately maintained in order to ensure that it will continuously stay in working order. Throughout the course of this brief guide, you will learn of just a few simple ways to maintain your garage door and make sure that it lives a long, healthy life.

Spring Inspection

It is recommended that you perform a safety check on your garage door once every other month. When it comes to ensuring that your garage door is safe, you should first and foremost examine your garage door's springs. Make sure that the springs are taut and showing no signs of wear and tear, including rust and cracking. Your garage door's springs are generally located in one of two places. Torsion springs are always located above the door itself. Extension springs, on the other hand, are generally mounted a bit above the rollers.

Lubrication

In order to make sure that your garage door properly opens and closes without any clunky vibes or shakiness occurring, make sure that your door is lubricated. The hinges, springs, and bearings should all be lubricated with a non-silicone based lubricant. There are generally instructions located in your garage door's user's manual. Rollers that are entirely constructed out of metal will require that you lubricate the entirety of the roller, while nylon-based rollers only require that you lubricate the bearings. Apply a brake cleaner with an old cloth after you have sufficiently applied the lubricant.

Clean The Door

Cleaning the door should not be a terribly taxing task and should not take up much of your time. You should only have to clean your garage door's exterior annually. Dilute a bit of detergent into a five gallon bucket of warm water, then use an old shirt or towel to soak up some of the solution to apply to the garage door's exterior. After giving the door a good scrub, rinse it off with a hose and make sure any excess debris, pollution, and grime is flooded off of the door. The inside of the door is an even easier task. It is recommended that you keep things as dry as possible by merely wiping the door off and then getting rid of any excess dust or cobwebs that you cannot reach with a broom.

Hopefully, this brief guide has given you some idea of how to go about maintaining your garage door and keeping it in good working order.
